The story behind the project

Victoria Day weekend in Canada

For years a small group of us have indulged in an easy canoe trip on what has traditionally been known as the "two-four" weekend. That time of the year in Nova Scotia can be sketchy, we've had everything from below freezing at night to wind and rain storms all weekend. Out of curiosity I looked up the weather over the past few years from historical Environment Canada data . Two weather stations that keep records represent the locations we tend to favour; inland lakes, represented by the Keji (Kejimkujik National Park) station and the southwestern coast, represented by the Western Head station.

We took the daily data which provided the min, max and average temperatures for each day of the year, plus total precipitation that day and other items. We chose the span from 2000 until present (2020 at the time of writing). We were limited to yearly extracts which then needed some cleanup to bring into R (the data analysis tool we use).

Over the last year I wrote a series of blog posts as I worked through the data.
